We all know men and women are different. But you likely don’t realise how different we are. Mentally, physically, and biologically, men and women are different. A big contributor to this is our sex hormones (oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone). These hormones fluctuate over a women’s lifetime and monthly during the reproductive years and have a lot to answer for. Despite our differences, a lot of healthcare and health-related technologies have been developed for men with the assumption that women are the same. FemTech is one area that is changing this and narrowing this sex-bias in healthcare.
What’s FemTech?
FemTech (or female technology) is where health and technology meet to transform the future of women’s healthcare. FemTech is an area providing a wide range of female specific solutions. These include menstrual health, pelvic and reproductive health, menopause as well as other conditions like heart disease and osteoporosis.
I’m Kelly and I’m the Founder of The FemTech Revolution. I’m approaching my mid-forties, have three kids in primary school, I work full time and run a business in my ‘spare time’. So, I know well that many of us women are busy. Really busy. And when we’re too busy, looking after ourselves falls to the end and basically entirely off our to-do list.
In my day job, I’m an Associate Professor in Bioengineering. I’ve spent 20 years as a researcher devoted to understanding the human body and supporting the development of new technologies to measure, predict and understand how the body works. From this experience, I’ve seen the benefits of health technologies and more women to benefit from these. This is what led me to start The FemTech Revolution!
Enter The FemTech Revolution
Most FemTech products aim to solve specific issues during the changes throughout a women’s life. And most are designed by women, for women. The FemTech Revolution is an online marketplace providing science backed innovations and technologies to support women’s health. We aim to hand pick the finest products from around the world and bring them to the women of Aotearoa. Our products aim to support and empower women to take charge of their own health and well-being. Menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life for most women of reproductive age. On average a women will menstruate for about 2,500 days of her life (that’s 7 days per period x 12 times a year x about 30 years of her life!). During this time, a woman could use as many as 10 thousand pads or tampons. Most of these single use disposable menstrual products will end up in landfills as plastic waste.
There are now many different solutions for ‘green periods’ – including period undies and menstrual cups. These will not only save you money in the long run, but they will help save the waste that is burdening our planet. Every small change helps!
How do period undies work?
Period underwear look and feel just like normal underwear, but they’re able to hold and absorb up to 50 ml of liquid! The underwear consists of a few different material layers that help to draw moisture away from your body, absorb fluid, and prevent any leakage with a waterproof layer.
